Abstract
This study aims to explore the concept of Viktor Shklovsky’s formalism theory of defamiliarization of love in Edgar Allan Poe's romantic poems. Specifically, it seeks to investigate how Poe utilizes various poetic devices to challenge conventional depictions of love and evoke a sense of unfamiliarity and ambiguity in his portrayal of romantic relationships. The research employs a qualitative, close reading approach to analyze eight selected poems by Edgar Allan Poe, focusing on both figurative language and sound patterns. The study examines the use of simile, metaphor, symbolism, and imagery, as well as alliteration, assonance, consonance, and parallelism, to elucidate how these devices contribute to the defamiliarization of love in Poe's poetry. The analysis reveals that Poe's poetic devices play a significant role in defamiliarizing conventional notions of love. Through vivid and evocative descriptions, Poe challenges readers to reconsider their understanding of romantic relationships. By shedding light on Poe's innovative use of figurative language and sound patterns, the study contributes to a deeper appreciation of his literary legacy and his enduring influence on Romantic literature. Moreover, it suggests avenues for further research, including comparative analyses with other Romantic-era poets and interdisciplinary approaches that integrate modern literary theories.
