Abstract

This study investigates the impact of reading comprehension and translation ability on EFL (English as a Foreign Language) students in the English Education Department at a state Islamic university in Bandung, Indonesia. The research aims to explore the impact of this integration on the linguistic skills of 6th-semester students at UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung. It also seeks to understand why this integration is crucial for improving these students' language skills. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, utilizing both qualitative and quantitative methods. The qualitative data will be gathered through in-depth interviews with a select group of participants. These interviews will allow for a deeper understanding of the participants' experiences, perceptions, and beliefs regarding the integration of reading comprehension and translation ability. The quantitative data will be collected through the G-form application. This form will assess the participants' Reading Comprehension and Translation skills through tasks or questions. This research is expected to contribute theoretically to the understanding of how reading comprehension and translation ability are interconnected and how their integration can enhance students' linguistic skills. In practical terms, the findings can inform educators about the importance of integrating these skills in the EFL classroom to improve students' overall language proficiency. The finding shows that integrating reading comprehension and translation abilities has a significant positive impact on the skills of 6th semester students at UIN Sunan Gunung Djati, as evidenced by the moderately positive Pearson correlation coefficients between these areas: 0.592 for reading comprehension and translation abilities, 0.578. Moreover, by integrating reading comprehension and translation ability, EFL students can develop a deeper understanding of the target language and enhance their ability to interpret and comprehend texts effectively. This can lead to improved communication skills, both written and oral, as well as a greater appreciation for different cultures and perspectives. Additionally, by fostering a more holistic approach to language learning, this integration can help students achieve greater fluency and accuracy in their use of English.
