Abstract

This study aims to determine the English vocabulary skills of young learners by using contextual teaching cartoon videos on young learners of class VII junior high school in Cigeulis. Specifically, this study aims to find out the process of contextual vocabulary teaching using video cartoons and to find out young learners' perceptions on the process of contextual vocabulary teaching using video cartoons. This research is a type of qualitative research that uses a case study design. In this study, contextual teaching is the main strategy that young learners use as an English vocabulary learning strategy using video cartoons. The researcher collected data through observation during learning activities, interviews, and distributing questionnaires to young learners. The number of participants in the observation was 27 students, in the interview the researcher selected 6 out of 27 students based on students' learning achievement, then the researcher distributed 16 questionnaire questions to 27 students. The results showed that, during the observation, students showed their enthusiasm during the contextual cartoon video teaching. Through the questionnaire and interview results, students expressed their responses that they liked and appreciated teaching using contextual cartoon videos in learning English vocabulary. The application of contextual strategy using video cartoons can improve students' learning process, students' learning interest, expand students' English vocabulary, and improve students' pronunciation. Therefore, this study can be a recommendation for teachers who have to improve students' English vocabulary.
