Abstract

Language attitudes can be seen from the attitude of a language speaker towards the language used to communicate with his environment. This study focuses on the language attitudes shown by Nikmatul Rosidah in communicating with her family who are Canadian citizens. The focus of this study is to identify positive and negative language attitudes, and social factors of language attitudes. The theory used in this study is Garvin and Mathiot's (1968) theory, which classifies positive and negative language attitudes into three classifications: language loyalty, language pride, and norm awareness. Then to find out the social factors that influence language attitudes using the theory by Holmes (1992), namely participants, settings (time and place setting), topics, and functions. This research uses a qualitative case study method. As a result, the most dominant language attitude that appears is the positive attitude of language loyalty shown by Nikmatul Rosidah. Then, the four social factors; the participants, settings, topics, and the functions that influence language attitudes are interrelated and cannot be separated from one another.
