Abstract

Maxim violation occurs through communication that connects one utterance with another. In the theory of maxim violation, a conversation does not always go smoothly. A simple conversation can become complex and cause misunderstanding. This study is dealing with flouting and violating maxim on Deddy Corbuzier Podcast YouTube channel focusing on its types and purposes. This research used a qualitative method, with a case study approach. The data used in this study were utterances on Deddy Corbuzier Podcast YouTube channel. The analysis used Grice's (1975) theory to identify the types of maxim violation, Guy Cook (1989) theory to classify the functions of flouting maxim, and Jazeri's (2008) theory to classify the functions of violating maxim. The findings showed there are 42 data as the types of flouting maxim and violating maxim on the Deddy Corbuzier and Nuseir Yassin interview. It consisted of 11 data flouting maxim of quantity, 4 datum flouting maxim of quality, 9 data flouting maxim of relation. Furthermore, there are 4 data violating maxim of quantity, 9 data violating maxim of quality, 2 data violating maxim of relation, and 3 data of violating maxim of manner. It can be concluded that less frequent violation of the maxim of manner and mostly frequent violation is maxim of quantity with the most frequent purpose are to proxility in flouting and to clarify in violating. Therefore it could be indicate that Deddy Corbuzier and Nuseir Yassin are better at conveying information in a clear and understandable way but in excess or less than needed.
