Abstract

This study aims to analyze the illocutionary acts in Amani Al-Khatahtbeh's speech titled "Going with the Flow or Defying the Current?" on the TED Talk YouTube channel. The research has two main objectives: first, to identify the types of illocutionary acts used; and second, to analyze the functions of each type. The data source for this study was taken from the transcript of the video uploaded on Saturday, September 8, 2016. The study employs a qualitative method using the illocutionary act theory proposed by Searle (1976) and Yule (1996), which covers five types of illocutionary acts. Among the 62 data points analyzed, the most dominant illocutionary act type is assertive. This is due to Amani's focus on conveying her views, sharing personal experiences, and providing information that reinforces her perspective on the topic discussed. No illocutionary acts related to declaration were found, as the speech does not aim to alter social status or situations but rather to share personal experiences and views. The most dominant illocutionary act function is stating, as the primary goal of the speech is to express Al-Khatahtbeh's personal views and beliefs to the audience. Other functions such as advising, suggesting, offering, vowing, guaranteeing, apologizing, congratulating, and declaration were not found in the data. This is due to the speech's focus on personal narrative and providing insight rather than giving advice, making offers, or formal declarations.
