Abstract

This research is aimed at investigating the forms of poetic language that represent the concept of loneliness in the novel Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury using Shklovsky's Defamiliarization theory. The theme of loneliness in the novel is not bluntly expressed, rather they are expressed through poetic language which is figurative in nature, hence the need for further interpretation to explain how the theme of loneliness emerges implicitly in the novel. This research focuses on two research questions, namely the forms of poetic language in Fahrenheit 451, and how those poetic languages represent the theme of loneliness. This research is supported by Perrine's Figures of Speech (Figurative Language) and Shklovsky's Defamiliarization. This research draws the data from narrative excerpts in Fahrenheit 451 and uses a descriptive qualitative method with an objective approach. The results of this research show that there are 6 forms of poetic language, namely metaphor, simile, hyperbole, personification, irony, and imagery. In addition, some narratives represent the theme of loneliness through the forms of poetic language which is divided into 3 categories: the poetic language of loneliness in Montag's longing for warmth, in the dark and empty atmosphere, and in the distant relationship between Montag and Mildred. This research concludes that the concept of loneliness is proven to be implied mostly through poetic imagery and metaphor in Fahrenheit 451.
