Abstract
Taboo words are considered inappropriate by specific social and cultural norms. However, nowadays, the use of taboo words has become more common. This research examines taboo words used by Black Americans and White Americans in a YouTube video by Kannel Joseph. In this video, several expressions involve taboo words. Therefore, there are two aims of this research. The first one is to find out the types of taboo words used by Black and White Americans. The second one is to analyze the functions of taboo words used by Black and White Americans. To support this research, the researcher uses Batistella’s (2005) theory about types of taboo words and Jay’s (1992) theory about the functions of taboo words. This research uses descriptive qualitative research. Based on the findings, there are 168 taboo words uttered by Black and White Americans in this video. Moreover, 4 types of taboo words found, namely epithet, profanity, vulgarity, and obscenity, appear in this research. The total of obscenity is 94 (78 from Black Americans and 16 from White Americans), epithet are 26 data (18 data from Black Americans and 8 data from White Americans), vulgarity with a total of 23 data (16 data from Black Americans and 7 data from White Americans) profanity 20 data (17 data from Black Americans and 3 data from White Americans). The total number of taboo words used by Black Americans is higher than White Americans. In functions of taboo words, five functions are used, namely anger/frustration, descriptive-evaluative, surprise, joking, and insults. Anger or frustration appears 65 data (45 data from Black Americans and 20 data from White Americans), descriptive-evaluative is 43 data (35 data from Black Americans and 8 data from White Americans), joking is 34 data (33 data from Black Americans and 1 data from White Americans), Surprise is 19 data (16 data from Black Americans and 3 data from White Americans). Meanwhile, sarcasm/ irony is only used by White Americans for 8 data.
