Abstract

Illocutionary act is the part of speech act which involves analyzing how speakers use language not only to convey information but also to perform social actions and influence the attitudes and behaviors of the audience. This research examines the illocutionary act contained in DEFENSE OF THE ANCIENT 2 (DOTA 2) Chat Wheel. This examination aims to analyzed the type of illocutionary act spotted in the DOTA 2 Chat Wheel and find the function of the illocutionary act related to Chat Wheel. The analysis was carried out by using Searle's (1979) theory to identify the type of illocutionary act spotted on utterances in the Chat Wheel, Austin's (1962) theory to identify the function of the utterances related to illocutionary act, and Yule's (1996) theory to help analyzing the data. The data obtained as the object for analysis are utterances from the Chat Wheel that using for simultaneous virtual communication in the DOTA 2 match. The method of this research is a qualitative descriptive analysis method. The researcher classified and then analyzed the data of the findings based on the type and function of the utterances. The results are: First, directive is the most common type found in DOTA 2 Chat Wheel utterances, that is 31 utterances, followed by expressive with 13 utterances, assertive with 10 utterances and commissive with 6 utterances. Meanwhile, the researcher did not find any utterances in the DOTA 2 Chat Wheel that were included declarative. Second, the functions of illocutionary acts found in the Chat Wheel explaining that chat wheel commands are important for effective team communication and coordination during the situation on the game. The function divided to commanding, requesting, informing, expressing and committing. By understanding the function of Chat Wheel commands, it can help players of the DOTA 2, to comprehend the context of the utterance in communicating during the match.
