Abstract

This study aims to identify and analyze the transitivity system and the ideational meaning in 15 Al Jazeera Instagram posts about Rafah attack. On May 24, 2024, The United Nations’ top court ordered Israel to immediately halt its ground assault on the southern Gaza city of Rafah, further increasing international pressure on Israel over its war against Hamas. Al Jazeera, as a frontline media that reports Middle-East things with a perspective that is at odds with other major media, is actively reporting on the Instagram platform which has massive global users. The researcher interests to analyze the ideational meaning that Al Jazeera represents of Rafah attack. This research used transitivity of systemic functional grammar theory from Halliday. The researcher adopted a qualitative approach by using transitiviy analysis method to find out the ideational meaning. The purpose of this study (1) to identify the processes, participants, and circumstances types which used in Instagram post of Al Jazeera English about Rafah attack, (2) to find out the ideational meaning which is realized from the processes, participants, and circumstances on the Instagram Post of Al Jazeera English about Rafah attack. The results showed that in 136 clauses from 15 Al Jazeera Instagram posts about Rafah attack that was taken from May 25, 2024 until May 28, 2024, there are 6 process types, 15 participant types, and 9 circumstance types. From these results, researchers found that ideational meaning which Al Jazeera want to represent about Rafah attack is: a miserable imagery of how Israel attacking Rafah, Israel’s abandonment of ICJ rule and its criticism, and the hope of Palestinians.
