Abstract
In a Presidential system of government, the President holds the highest authority, influencing policy direction and driving progress across various sectors. The State of the Union Address is a unique platform for the President to present performance evaluations and future visions. In Joe Biden’s second State of the Union Address on February 7, 2023, He is not only conveying information about the state of the country but also tries to create an emotional bond with the audience. Therefore, analyzing the use of social deixis in this speech becomes relevant to examining how language can create closeness or distance with various layers of society. This study aims to answer two primary questions: 1. What types of social deixis were used by Joe Biden in his Second State of the Union Address to the United States Congress? 2. What is the function of social deixis used by Joe Biden in his Second State of the Union Address to the United States Congress? The research employs a descriptive-qualitative method, allowing for an in-depth exploration of social phenomena from the perspective of participants. By examining Joe Biden's speech, the study categorizes and analyzes instances of social deixis using Levinson (1983) framework. The analysis identified 74 utterances containing social deixis expressions in Joe Biden's speech, classified into 50 data of relational social deixis and 24 data of absolute social deixis. Furthermore, 27 utterances were found to serve specific functions of social deixis: 2 data as social status differentiators, 10 data as markers of politeness, and 15 data as indicators of social identity. The study concludes that relational social deixis, particularly authorized recipients, is the most prevalent type used in the address, reflecting the formal nature of the event. Social identity emerged as the dominant function, highlighting Biden's effort to create an emotional connection and inclusiveness among the audience.
