Abstract
Adaptation is the process of transferring one type of literary work into another form of literary work. In this study, the author conducted research on the adaptation of the novel Bird Box by Josh Malerman into the movie Bird Box by Susanne Bier. Where researchers focus on finding changes that occur in intrinsic elements, as well as on the form of similarities and differences after experiencing the adaptation process in the form of text, quotes, and images. This research also uses a type of qualitative description research method. The theory used in the research is the theory of ecranisation from Pamusuk Eneste (1991) which divides the adaptation process into three parts, namely shrinkage, addition, and modification/variation. Therefore, the researcher set two problems, namely (1) How is the adaptation process of intrinsic elements in the novel "Bird Box" into the movie "Bird Box"? (2) What are the main differences and similarities between the novel and the movie "Bird Box"?. The results of this study found the adaptation process in the novel in the form of reductions, additions, and varied changes/modifications. In the plot, there are reduction (24 data), addition (14 data), and modification (22 data). In the character, there are a reduction (5 data), addition (5 data), and modification (6 data). In the characterization, found (11 data). Then, in the setting, there are reductions (2 data), additions (2 data), and modifications (8 data). In theme, there are similarities (5 data) and differences (1 data). And there are differences from the point of view of both. Although there are reductions, additions, and modifications, in general, the novel and the movie Bird Box still have similarities in the core of the story conveyed.
