Abstract
This study explored the use of positive and negative politeness strategies in United Nations diplomats' speeches addressing the Israel-Palestine conflict, using Brown and Levinson's (1987) politeness theory. A qualitative descriptive approach was applied, analyzing 48 utterances from three UN YouTube videos. The analysis identified 26 instances of negative politeness and 22 instances of positive politeness. Positive politeness strategies, such as expressions of gratitude, inclusive language, and showing interest in the listener's needs, were more frequently used to build rapport and solidarity. These strategies aimed to foster a sense of mutual respect and cooperation, which are essential for maintaining harmonious relations in diplomatic communication. Negative politeness strategies, like hedging, apologizing, and minimizing imposition, focused on respecting the listener's autonomy and mitigating potential face-threatening acts. These strategies were crucial for navigating the delicate balance of showing empathy and maintaining diplomatic decorum in highly sensitive political discourse. The frequent use of positive politeness underscored its importance in fostering positive social interactions, while negative politeness helped to manage the inherent sensitivities of the conflict. This research highlighted the role of language in facilitating effective communication and conflict resolution at the international level.
