Abstract

This study investigates the phenomenon of code-switching among language coaches at Kampung Inggris Bandung EPLC, an English language training center. The research aims to identify types and social contexts of code-switching in pedagogical contexts by analysing interactions across different program levels. The study employs a qualitative approach, using observations and interviews to gather data from coaches. In the types of code-switching, the researcher analysed the utterances using Hoffman’s theory. The findings show three types found, 32 data of inter-sentential, 34 data of intra-sentential, and 4 data of extra-sentential. So, it would be 70 data used in total. On the other hand, the social contexts behind code-switching are analysed using Meechan & Rees-Miller’s theory. Findings show that code switching serves multiple roles in social context, including age (2 data), gender (12 data), regional variation (5 data), and situation-specific factors (5 data). This research shows that using multiple languages is a helpful tool for learning English.
