Abstract

This study investigates the phenomenon of code-mixing, where speakers combine two or more languages in their communication, with a focus on YouTube beauty influencers. Using Pieter Muysken’s theory to classify types of code-mixing and Janet Holmes’ theory to explore the reasons behind code-mixing, this study aims to analyze both aspects in the context of beauty influencer videos. A qualitative approach was used, involving the recording and analysis of 426 utterances from the YouTube channels of Sunny Dahye, Tasya Farasya, and Molita Lin. The findings revealed that insertion was the most common type of code-mixing, appearing in 197 utterances, followed by congruent lexicalization in 196 utterances. Alternation was the least common type, found in only 33 utterances. The study also highlighted that the primary reason for code-mixing used by influencers was to indicate the topic being discussed. This use aligns with the content’s focus on specific themes, indicating how code-mixing serves to enhance communication and engagement with their audience. Overall, this study provides insight into the types of code-mixing used by beauty influencers and the reasons behind their use. It illustrates how code-mixing functions as a tool to emphasize content and increase clarity, which contributes to a better understanding of language dynamics on social media.
