Abstract

Blended words are one of the linguistic phenomena that are currently developing in linguistic studies. Blended words are formed from two pre-existing words combined to form a new word and the new meaning is often used to convey ideas or feelings in a unique and unconventional way, thus creating a new meaning that can only be understood by certain groups, one of which is by young people. Blended words are a study of morphology as a science that studies the structure of words or the formation of a word where part of a word concerns the internal structure of the word and how to analyze it into smaller parts (morphemes). This study was conducted to analyze the formation of words from blended words and their types and functions used by young people in speaking on one of the popular social media platforms to date, namely Application X. The main theory used in this study is the Transformational-Generative Grammar Theory of Noam Chomsky in the 1950s. The qualitative method used in this study aims to explain the formation of words, types, and functions in the blended words. There are 50 data included in the blended words of the five types and their functions. There are 50 data included in the mixed words of the five types and their functions. This data was obtained through the process of searching, classification and analysis. From the findings and analysis carried out, 5 data are initialism types, there are 15 data of derivation types. For the compounding type, there are 12 data, while 13 data are clipping types, and finally there are 5 data of conversion types. For its function, there are more than the total data findings because many words have dual functions. In general, it shows the types and functions of blended words that are often found in the derivation type and the change of meaning function.
