Abstract
This study investigates the use of assertive speech acts by Andrew Tate in the podcast “Islam is The Future”. Using the theory of Searle and Vanderveken (1985) was utilized to categorize the types and functions of these acts, this study aims to analyze the types and the functions used by Andrew Tate. A qualitative approach was used to analyze the utterances containing assertive speech acts from the podcast. This study identified five types of assertive speech acts: asserting, reporting, hypothesizing, informing, and stating. A total of 123 data of assertive speech acts were found, with asserting being the most dominant at 64 data. The predominance of asserting can be attributed to the podcast’s focus on Andrew Tate's views on Islam, a significant topic that necessitates the use of assertive statements to demonstrate authority and credibility, thereby fostering trust among listeners. Otherwise, stating was the least common type, with only 8 data. This is because the complexity and sensitivity of religious topics, especially in public discussions such as podcasts. Religious discussions often require personal interpretations and nuanced expressions, making the more objective nature of stating less suitable for conveying Andrew Tate's personal perspectives on Islam. This study provides insight into the types and function of assertive speech act used by Andrew Tate and the reasons behind their use.
