Abstract

Idioms are one of the important aspects of language that reflects the way of thinking, perception, and culture of the speakers of the language. Idioms are defined as language expressions whose meaning often cannot be derived literally from their constituent words. This research aims to contrastively analyze idioms related to 'head' in English and Korean. The main focus of the research is to identify the types of idioms based on structure and level of idiomaticity, analyze the meaning construction of idioms, and investigate the similarities and differences of idioms related to 'head' in the two languages. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with the approach of contrastive analysis and cognitive semantics. The research data were obtained from idiom dictionaries and online websites that present information related to idioms in English and Korean. From the 24 English idioms and 22 Korean idioms analyzed, the results show that (1) there are variations in the types of idioms related to 'head' in both languages, both in terms of structure and level of idiomaticity; (2) the construction of idiom meaning in English and Korean has its own uniqueness which is influenced by their respective cultural and cognitive backgrounds; (3) there are some conceptual similarities in the use of idioms related to 'head' such as the conceptual metaphor HEAD IS A CONTAINER, but there are significant differences in linguistic and cultural aspects. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of idiom comparison across languages and cultures.
