Abstract
Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a powerful educational application that allowing students to complete tasks effectively. This study aims to explore EFL student’s positive and negative experiences in essay writing using Artificial Intelligence applications and their essay writing result. A qualitative approach and a case study design were adopted in this research to achieve the aim. The research involves eight-semester students which consist of seven participants from the English Education Department at the Islamic State University. The findings show positive aspects that students gain from using ChatGPT and Grammarly for essay writing including convenience, speed, accuracy, and effectiveness. However, there are also negative aspects that students faced. The ease of using AI has been led students to overly reliant, their writing skills, and a sense of laziness in completing assignments. Furthermore, this research can help teachers provide guidance for students in applying AI to complete their assignments in a professional way. In addition, teachers can be aware of the usage of AI in the classroom especially because of negative outcomes that students could face in the future.
