Abstract

The ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine has become a very popular case being discussed throughout the world. As the war in Ukraine unfolds, the news related to the war is highly visualized above all in social media, one of which is on YouTube. This depiction of war triggers various emotional responses from netizen, resulting in a flurry of interaction in the comment section. This thesis examines expressive speech act in netizens comments on the YouTube video “Huge Explosion Seen in Sky Over Ukraine’s Capital Kyiv-BBC News”. This research aims to find out the types of expressive speech acts and analyze the purpose of expressive speech acts contained in netizens comments. The qualitative research method was used to conduct this reseach. The data was collected from document that was taken from the utterances in netizens comments on the selected YouTube video. The techniques of analyzing the data are data reduction, data presentation and data conclusion. The data then analyzed based on the Searle’s (1969) , Searle & Vanderveken’s (1985) and Norrick’s (1978) theory. The results found 202 expressive speech act consisting of 5 types in which 1 data as expressive speech act of greeting, 1 data as expressive speech act of apologizing, 20 data as expressive speech act of praising, 79 data as expressive speech act of wishing, and 101 data as expressive speech act of attitudes. From a purposes perspective, expressive speech acts in the data contain various communicative purposes. The researcher concludes that netizens used different types of expressive speech acts and each types they used are to express their feeling and attitudes as the reaction to the Russia and Ukraine conflict.
