Abstract

This research investigates the persuasive language in advertisement analyzed from rhetorical discourse and rhetoric expression. This research focusses on two main problems: (1) Rhetorical discourse that shows the persuasion in insurance advertisements and (2) The types of rhetoric expression used in insurance advertisement. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method because the data of this research are the form of spoken and written text. The data in this research are all sentences, utterances and pictures in insurance advertisements which contain and perform persuasion. This research uses Herrick’s (2000) theory to analyze the data of rhetorical discourse and Fromilhague’s (1995) theory to analyze the data of rhetoric expression. Based on the data analysis, this research shows some findings. From the twenty eight data of rhetorical discourse which are taken in the eight advertisement, there are eight data using argument, six data using appeals, eight data using arrangement and six data using aesthetics. From all advertisement, argument and arrangement are the resource of symbol systems that are always used. Next, the rhetoric expression in the insurance are found in twenty three data which are taken from eight commercial advertisement; one data of assonance, four data of rhyme, two data of anaphora, four data of alliteration, two data of apostrophe, four data of climax, two data of parallelism, one data of synecdoche, two data of rhetorical question and one data of hyperbole.
