Abstract
The teaching of English as a Foreign and International Language needs to be tought for students at schools it is necessary, to combine some techniques in order to get target in teaching and learning activities Consequently, it is very important for teachers to select the best and appropriate technique for them. The purpose of this investigation is to know the teachers ability in selecting techniques in teaching and learning activities in classroom, especially in senior high school. Teaching gerunds sometimes being a difficult subject because it requires good understanding to know it (gerund), because gerund has simlarity with present participle, the writer want to know about the difficulties of the students in learning gerunds, based that the writer also tries to make a short discussion about the problem found in learning gerund, the writer will show the difficulties in learning the subject matter and the give a better solution to over come the students problem Realizing the writer's argumentation about the difficulties faced in teaching gerund, the writer try to use simple and easy way to help the students, in this case the teacher will be better to take or select one of techniques and integrated method in order to teach English using writing and speaking technique to make their students understand and master it subject well The method used in this survey method for the purpose of descriptive method There are several techniques in this method, they are observation, interview, achievement test and literature study, the writer decided to take 40 students as the sample of this investigation it means the write will take about 35% where as operationally The writer will chose the random sampling. Data analysis use static method and after data have been analyzed, the result indicates that teaching gerunds using controlled techniques is more suitable than correlative techniques it showed with students score in achievement test The process of teaching and learning the gerund through the appropriate controlled techniques to year two students of SMU Negeri 1 Maja-Majalengka is successfully achieved, ye' there are still some students who find difficulties in learning English, especially in learning the gerund Based on the analysis above, it can be drawed that there is a significant to different between the result that controlled technique will be better than the order technique to use before in teaching gerunds
