Abstract

Assertive speech acts served as pivotal elements in language use, enabling individuals to convey statements, share information, and express their beliefs confidently. This study analyzed the assertive speech acts of Margot Mills, the main character in The Menu, focusing on the types of assertive illocutionary forces she employed and the felicity conditions of her utterances. Out of 22 identified instances, the most frequently used assertive speech act was stating, with 14 occurrences, followed by informing (4 instances), complaining (3 instances), and suggesting (1 instance). The absence of other assertive acts such as boasting, demanding, and reporting indicated a deliberate pattern in Margot's communication. Additionally, the analysis revealed that all 22 utterances met the required conditions, making them felicitous. This highlighted that Margot consistently utilized assertive speech acts, particularly stating, as a means to express disagreement and convey opinions to her interlocutors. This reflected a profound understanding of illocutionary force and felicity conditions within the cinematic discourse context.
