Abstract
This thesis is initiated by significance of adjective in understanding Burgess' novel Importance of adjective forming should be viewed as something considerable to be researched Then, the thesis discusses Burgess' novel considered to be representative on the adjective forming In the novel there are of course many adjectives that should be revealed up in relation to process of the forming It means that they are meant as something integrated throughout, in the meanwhile, adjectives can also enhance and enrich sentence meaning of the Tremor of Intent The most adjectives in the novel have implication to syntactical elements of the sentences, so that Burgess is categorized into an American writer who accounts for his adjectives, in this way, the novel is full of containing adjectives to analyze. The thesis uses the descriptive method This method depicts or gives description on the existing problem of the research as it is It also explains how the adjective forming work with the text and can portray a significant role of reviving ideas poured into a creative-writing process This research is surely enhanced through the supporting theories on adjective Also, the proposed problems are about the process of adjective forming and effect to unity of Burgess novel. The correlation between the descriptive method and these theories gets the first place in exploring the writer's creativity in the novel text. Analysis on adjective refers to two formations change from noun to adjective and change from verb to adjective The transformation from noun to adjective can of course be understood through attaching suffix at the end, for example, the adjective bloody derives from the noun blood, by adding the suffix - y at the end, the blood can be bloody, the adjective girlish derives from the noun girl, by adding the suffix tsh at the end, the girl can be girlish, the adjective elemental derives from the noun element, by adding the suffix al at the end, the element can be elemental Meanwhile, the transformation from verb to adjective can be seen through present and past participle adjective, for instance, the adjective burning derives from the verb burn, by adding the suffix ing at the end, the verb burn can be adjective burning called present participle adjective, the adjective neglected derives from the verb neglect, by adding the suffix ed at the end, the verb neglect can be adjective neglected called past participle adjective, Therefore, the adjective forming, in principle, is processed through morphological ways suffixation. Finally, the writer can make conclusion that discussion of adjective forming on Burgess' novel focuses on the transformation from noun to adjective and verb to adjective Basically, adjectives in the novel have function as to define or confine the noun or noun phrase in a sentence, so they give influence to meaning field, either lexically or syntactically On such a view, the adjective forming is considered to be crucial to discuss.
