Abstract
This study aims to examine the use of women’s language features in the context of gender inequality issues, as reflected through female characters in the Netflix series Anne With An E. The series is adapted from the classic novel Anne of Green Gables which is set in the late 19th century, where gender inequality issues dominate. This research is based on the theoretical framework developed by Lakoff (1975), which identifies ten features of women’s language. Through in-depth analysis of dialog and interactions between characters, this study explores how women’s language features such as hedges, tag questions, and super polite forms reflect the experiences and challenges faced by women at that time. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative, with the aim to explore and describe in detail how features of womens language are used by the characters in Anne With An E, and how they reflect and reinforce gender inequality. The results showed that there were 194 data describing the use of women’s language features by fifteen female characters. In addition, the female characters in the series use women’s language features with various functions. Expressive and referential functions dominate as many conversations focus on conveying important information or deep emotions. Thus, the use of women’s language features in Anne With An E shows that gender inequality in language use can affect the way women communicate.
