Abstract

This research analyzes how the film Death on The Nile applies the classical detective formula theory by John G. Cawelti, aiming to understand whether or not the 2022 film by Kenneth Branagh applies the popular formula of the classical detective story. This research uses John G. Cawelti’s theory of the classical detective formula to guide the analysis. It was conducted using a qualitative descriptive method, which involved a detailed analysis of various scenes and dialogues from the film, focusing on multiple aspects of Cawelti’s classical detective formula. This research found that the film precisely applied the classical detective formula elements, particularly in terms of the situation, pattern of action, characters, and setting. These findings contribute to a better understanding and provide valuable insight into how current works use the traditional popular formulas, particularly the classical detective formula, in current and different types of works, which in the context of this research is film.
