Abstract

Language is a tool for interaction with interlocutors. Communication is basic in human life. Thus, English has become an international language. This research objective is to analyze pictures and textual features of cultural dimensions presented in ELT textbooks entitled “Bright - an English Course” according to Yuen's (2011) Dimensions. This research uses qualitative research with content analysis methodology. The research data is English textbook content with the title “Bright – an English Course” for 7th Grade Students of Junior High School published by Erlangga, with 8 chapters inside. The framework of analysis in this research is based on Yuen's (2011) theory. The theory is used to analyze the cultural dimension that is presented inside the textbook. The data were collected starting from each chapter in the textbook. The result of content analysis based on the cultural dimensions of Yuen in the textbook is dominated by Product (101 items), followed by Persons (18 items), Practices (3 items), and Perspectives (1 item) with a total 123 items of cultural dimensions in the textbook. The cultural content in the textbook is found in reading text, grammar items, and exercises on Activity, You Should Know, Critical Thinking tasks, Let's Create, Mini Project, Reflection, and Let’s Practise on language skills of writing, reading, listening, and speaking activity in the textbook. Moreover, the result of the representation of cultural dimensions based on Yuen in the textbook is in line with the intercultural competence in Merdeka curriculum based on SK Kepala BSKAP (Badan Standar, Kurikulum, dan Asesmen Pendidikan) No. 8 Tahun 2022 that aim to understand and appreciate the perspectives, practices, and products of Indonesian and foreign cultures. This research concludes that the cultural dimensions based on Yuen and the indications of Indonesian culture and foreign culture are not balanced in this book, considering this book is a new publication and the content of the textbook is updated from the 2013 curriculum into the Merdeka curriculum in 2022.
