Abstract
The purposes of this research are to elaborate how the authors of the film “Project Almanac” pour their creativities in depicting a peculiar concept of time travel through this film, to elaborate the narrative techniques and visual effects used in Project Almanac that convey the idea of time travel, as well as to find out how such techniques contribute to the temporal realism in Project Almanac. The results of this research assign that there is a distinct concept of time-travel applied by the directors in their movie “Project Almanac”. It includes time-travel is not necessarily about travelling back further to hundred years past; it should even be started from just going back to a few hours past. Second, time-travelling to hundreds of years to the past or future is always pictured effortless, harmless, and not to mention, not causing any side effects for the time-travellers after time-travelling as depicted in the other time-travel movies as Lucy (2014) and Interstellar (2014). In Project Almanac, a tiny single change done by the characters in the past can cause many unexpected, unwanted substantial ripple effects that the audience wouldn’t perceive beforehand. Likewise, the use of daily technologies and the effects caused by the running time-machine bring the characters’ time-travel journeys to be highly realistic and feasible. As a result, such an approach is believed to be the directors’ implicit intentions to lead the audience regard that time-travelling is not like what they have been thinking the whole time. The conclusion of this research lies on the success of the directors in effectively delivering their unique approach on time travel through the scenes, dialogues, and cinematography. The mixtures of found footages and traditional techniques carry the audience into a realistic journey, while dialogues integrate scientific explanations with emotional depth, enhancing character development and prompting philosophical contemplation of temporal manipulation. Through cinematography, including found footage and visual effects, they ground the speculative concept of time travel in a credible narrative, intensifying its engagement with the characters' challenges.
