Abstract

This study aims to identify the types of politeness maxims and the factors that cause politeness maxims in the Talkshow on Dedi_4548 YouTube channel as a form of digital academic discourse. The theories used to analyze the data in this study are the theory of Leech (1983) and Fishman (1972). The method employed in this study is qualitative using a content analysis approach, and the data were collected from digital academic content on the Dedi_4548 YouTube Channel. This YouTube channel is a collaboration between lecturers and students of UIN Bandung, where the Talkshow discusses cross-cultural differences in an academic digital setting. This study found 101 data from 9 videos that were identified using 6 types of politeness maxims, including Tact Maxim (16 data), Generosity Maxim (8 data), Approbation Maxim (18 data), Modesty Maxim (11 data), Agreement Maxim (47 data), and Sympathy Maxim (1 data). This indicated that the Agreement Maxim aims to create more harmonious and productive relationships between individuals and others. This study also found 101 data from 9 videos that caused the politeness maxim, including social class factors (8 data), age factors (1 data), gender factors (2 data), and situational context factors (90 data). This dominance highlights how politeness is deeply intertwined with the dynamic nature of talk show interactions, where participants must continuously adjust their language based on the setting, topic, and communicative function within the digital academic discourse framework.
