Abstract

This research examines the use of positive politeness to represent the Asian culture of BTS’ Kim Namjoon, a Korean artist during his interview on Zach Sang Show's YouTube channel entitled RM Breaks Down His Debut Album 'Indigo.' Positive politeness strategy is frequently used to see how the closeness between speaker and hearer through the utterances delivered has been developed by considering the context of the social interaction. This research focuses on the primary theory of Brown & Levinson (1987), which underlies that there are 15 strategies used to fulfill the use of positive politeness strategies and the influencing factors in it. In addition, this study also has a developing theory proposed by Samovar et al. (2013) that shows the Asian culture through cultural habits in communication. The analysis of BTS Kim Namjoon's utterances shows how positive politeness demonstrates Asian habits and their influencing factors. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method to explore and describe BTS Kim Namjoon's positive politeness strategies and the factors influencing them. The results of this study consist of 99 data representing each use of 15 positive politeness with the most strategy used is seeking agreement with a total of 24 data. In addition, some factors influencing the use of positive politeness strategies are payoffs and circumstances (the sociological variables) fulfilled through BTS Kim Namjoon's utterances, showing how communication between participants is accomplished regardless of cultural backgrounds.
