Abstract

This research examines the heroine archetype in Dustin Thao’s novel You’ve Reached Sam and explores the heroine, Julie, supports the romance formula. The research applies Janice A. Radway’s romance theory to analyze Julie’s contribution to the novel’s romantic structure. Using a qualitative research method with a structuralism approach, this research identifies Julie’s archetypal traits and examines how her development aligns with the traditional romance formula. The findings reveal that Julie embodies the archetypes of the Librarian and the Nurturer. As the Librarian, Julie is depicted as beautiful and intelligent, while as The Nurturer, she demonstrates compassion, kindness, and an understanding nature. This research also identifies 8 elements of the ideal romance, as outlined by Radway’s theory. Unlike conventional romance heroines who are often portrayed as passive, the heroine, Julie plays an active role in her emotional journey, reflecting a modern and independent heroine. Romance in this novel is not only about a love story between two individuals but also about grief, healing, and self-discovery. This research contributes to the literary analysis of contemporary romance novels by providing insights into how modern heroines are portrayed. Future research could explore heroines in different romance genres, compare cultural representations of romance, or examine how readers perceive and relate to these characters.
