Abstract

This research investigates the phenomenon of flouting conversational maxims in Solo Leveling, a webtoon by Chugong, utilizing Grice’s (1976) framework on maxims and Thomas’s (2014) theory of flouting maxim factors The study aims to achieve two primary objectives: first, to identify the types of flouting maxims employed in the dialogues of Solo Leveling; and second, to examine the contextual significance conveyed through the flouting of these maxims by the main characters. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the research employs a systematic procedure beginning with reading and selecting dialogues from the webtoon, coding instances of flouting, and analyzing them through identification, reduction, classification, description, and interpretation. The study finds that Seong Jin-Woo flouts all four Gricean maxims—quality, quantity, relation, and manner—for narrative and character development. These violations help him conceal information, mislead others, or create ambiguity, enriching the story. Jin-Woo’s cryptic responses and downplaying of his abilities highlight his strategic, enigmatic nature. Flouting maxims advances the plot by escalating tension, adding humor, and driving key events while reinforcing Jin-Woo’s portrayal as a powerful, multifaceted character. This linguistic strategy deepens the thematic and narrative complexity of Solo Leveling, showcasing how language shapes storytelling and character identity through pragmatic and cultural nuance.
