Abstract

As foreign language learners, Indonesian students often find problems with vocabulary when they speak, read, or listen to English words. It might be caused by several factors such as motivation, intelligence, the situation and condition of the environment, learning materials, and the teacher’s ability in handling the English teaching learning process. Using some interesting media and methods usually used in order to boost students’ motivation and ability, especially in vocabulary mastery. One of the methods or activities that can be used is extramural activities. This study is aimed to: (1) find out the students’ vocabulary mastery in Senior High School; (2) to find out the students’ extramural activities in Senior High School; (3) to explore the correlation between EFL students’ extramural activities and their vocabulary mastery. There are two hypotheses in this study; null hypothesis (H0) which means there is no significant correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and their extramural activities, and alternative hypothesis (Ha) which means there is a significant correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and their extramural activities. Quantitative approach is used in this research by correlating two variables: Extramural activities as independent variable (X) and vocabulary mastery as dependent variable (Y). The population in this study is the first year which consists of three classes starting from X IPA until X IPS 2. 30 students was taken as the sample who determined by random sampling technique. The instruments used in this study are questionnaire of students’ extramural activities and students’ vocabulary test. The collected data are analyzed by using Pearson Product Moment Correlation Formula. The results denoted that there is low correlation between students’ extramural activities and their vocabulary mastery, in spite of students’ sufficiency in extramural activities and their vocabulary mastery. It proved by r_count (0.090) which is lower than r_table(0,361). It can be inferred that null hypothesis (H_0) is accepted and the alternative hypothesis (H_a) is rejected. In conclusion, there is no correlation between EFL students' extramural activities and their vocabulary mastery
