Abstract

Manipulation is a darker facet of human interaction that involves the deceptive influence of a person’s beliefs, desires, and emotions to serve the manipulator’s personal gain. The psychological mechanisms behind manipulation, mainly how manipulators construct false identities and exploit others, align closely with Jung’s archetypes, namely the persona and shadow. Manipulative behaviour is depicted in the novel My Dark Vanessa through the character of Jacob Strane. Based on the research background, this study aimed to analyze how Strane employs his persona to manipulate others and how his shadow drives his manipulative behaviour. This study applied a qualitative research method and literary criticism by using an objective approach. Additionally, this study used Jung’s archetype theory of the persona and shadow, with the assistance of the manipulation theory by George K. Simon (2010) and the child grooming theory by Georgia Winters and Elizabeth Jeclic (2016). The study found that Strane employed his persona to manipulate others in six key roles: an educator, a romantic man, a misfit, a gentleman, a victim of circumstances, and a protector. Furthermore, Strane’s motivations for manipulating others were rooted in his shadow as an ephebophile, which includes his repressed desire for pubescent girls and his fear of being exposed. This shadow manifests in behaviours that align with the identity of a child predator. Through the concept of persona and shadow, this research highlighted the psychological mechanisms behind Strane’s manipulations, where his persona enabled him to groom Vanessa and mask his true nature, while his shadow fueled his predatory inclinations.
