Abstract

This research aims to describe the stereotype in social environment and identity development especially in contexts of immigrant narratives based on the book America Is Not the Heart by Elaine Castillo. This paper involves a qualitative research approach with textual analysis in specific looking at various themes in characters’ interactions, which portray social contexts’ impact on the self. In this context, orientalism, cultural assimilation and the identity theory is used to explain the processes and dilemmas and the ways through which characters adjust in a new culture. The research addresses the problem statement: Exploring the manner in which social environment shapes the process of the formation of identity of immigrant characters in America Is Not the Heart. Therefore, the present research, analysing the characters’ transformations carefully unveiled the fact that social context significantly influenced them and the major conflict of the novel touches upon the struggle between the Eastern roots and the necessity to adapt to the American/Western culture. In this context, the presented results help to extend the understanding of such aspects of individual identity as migration and culture exchange.
