Abstract

The anti-war movement is a form of social movement that occurs for certain reasons that are usually related to social conflict. The anti-war movement emerged in response to the rejection of war conflicts that occurred around the 60-70s, such as the Vietnam war conflict and the Bangladesh independence war. Folk song is one of the song genres that is synonymous with social and cultural messages, so this research uses songs by Joan Baez who is considered a folk musician because the lyrics of her songs contain many social messages, especially anti-war messages. This research uses the figurative language theory of Cleanth Brooks and Raymond Gibbs as the main theory, as well as social action theory from Max Weber and mobilization theory from Charles Tilly as supporting theories. This research found 64 data on the use of figurative language in Joan Baez's song lyrics which are classified into 7 types of figurative language, which are metaphor, simile, irony, metonymy, personification, symbol, and hyperbole. From the 64 data examined in this study, the researcher concluded that metaphor and irony are the two dominant and effective types of figurative language used in conveying anti-war messages in Joan Baez's song lyrics.
