Abstract
This research aims to analyze about method and ideology of translation in a novel “The Kite Runner” and it was translated by Berliani M. into the same title. The objectives of this study are the translation methods employed in translating direct speech and the ideology of direct speech in the novel “The Kite Runner”. This research is designed in a qualitative approach using a descriptive method. The method of collecting data in this study was through documentation technique, and the steps are downloading, note-taking and transcribing. The theories used are translation methods proposed by Newmark (1988), and the theory of ideology translation proposed by Venuti (1994). The data for this research is in form of 90 direct speeches which have been selected purposively. There are 7 methods that used by the translator, which are word-for-word translation (10 data), communicative translation (32 data), semantic translation (19 data), free translation (1 data), faithful translation (2 data), literal translation (21 data), and idiomatic (5 data). From the explanation above, it showed that the translation was oriented to Source Language (SL). The ideology of translation is foreignization. Proves that, there are 52 data used methods that emphasis to source language and 9 cultural terms that are not translated by the translator, it showed that the translator tried to introduce the source cultural terms to the target reader. This shows that the translators ideology in translating direct speech is oriented to source language or foreignization.
