Abstract

This research analyzes code switching in the Instagram @timothyronaldd related to the type and function of code switching. This research adopted a descriptive approach by transcribing videos through words and using qualitative methods to collect data. In analyzing the types of code switching in the study, researcher used the theory of Poplack (1980). As for the function of code switching, this research uses the theory of Janet Holmes (2001). With a total of 50 data found from @timothyronaldd Instagram. The results showed that the type of code switching most commonly found was Intra-sentential code switching. With the most common function also found is referential function. This shows that there is an indication that speakers usually use Indonesian as a whole, only when necessary, such as for technical terms or popular expressions are required.
