Abstract

This research aims at analyzing the fantasy formula contained in The School for Good and Evil (2022) movie. This research uses the theory of the fantasy formula genre known as the Appeal Element by Joyce G. Saricks (2009). The main focus of this research is to identify the fantasy formula in the depiction of the world of good and evil. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method. The results of this research indicate that there are five fantasy formulas. The first element is the frame/setting, which is a parallel world that is the main setting in the story. This setting shows the real world and the fairy tale world. Second, the storyline. Sophie and Agatha face challenges that test their identity and fight evil. Third is characterization. There are two main characters, namely Sophie, a girl who is considered good but turns out to have an evil side in her, and Agatha, a girl who is considered evil because of her appearance but turns out to be a true princess who is sincere. Fourth, the pacing in this film is slow because the story focuses on the development of the fantasy world. Fifth, the tone/mood is emotional and sad, triggered by the regret and sacrifice made by the main character. In addition, there are eight symbols of fantasy elements that contribute to the construction of the concept of good and evil. These symbols are supporting elements in presenting a magical atmosphere and become narrative markers in directing the character’s journey. These symbols not only deepen the meaning of the story but also reflect the internal conflicts experienced by the characters in the process of searching for identity and social tension. Thus, the fantasy formula supported by symbols in fantasy elements plays an important role in representing the world of good and evil in The School for Good and Evil (2022) movie.
