Abstract

This research aims to analyze the novel Maurice (1971) by E.M. Forster and The Sweet Sins (2012) by Rangga Wirianto Putra in constructing the sexuality of its characters. Since it discusses two literary works from two different countries and at different periods, this study employs a comparative literature approach. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach. The data are words, phrases, sentences, statements, dialogues, as well as monologues in the novel. The techniques of collecting data used in this research are document analysis by reading the novels, observing the main characters, note-taking, categorizing signs based on the construction of sexuality, comparing, and analyzing the results. The results of the analysis show that Maurice deals with the strict heteronormative values and legal criminalization set by Victorian society and in The Sweet Sins, homosexuality comes along under the pressure of the family, society’s prejudices and cultural ideas in modern Indonesia. Additionally, Clive and Ardo, as supporting characters, reveal the process of the construction of heterosexuality influenced by the pressure from society and their families. It is concluded that the characters' construction of sexuality is similar in both novels, but their choices, struggles, and outcomes differ due to the distinct cultural and temporal settings.
