Abstract

This research aims to determine the correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and their speaking performance in English presentation. Therefore, the research is aimed to achieve three objectives: 1) To assess the level of students’ vocabulary mastery; 2) To find out the students’ speaking performance in English presentation, and 3) To examine the correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and their speaking performance in English presentation. This research applies a correlational method as a quantitative research design. Two types of tests were used to collect data, namely the vocabulary mastery test and the speaking performance test. The vocabulary mastery test aimed to measure students' level of vocabulary mastery, while the speaking performance test was used to measure students' speaking performance in English presentation. The data analysis process in this research was carried out by utilizing SPSS version 27 software. The samples in this research were 34 students from the 11th-grade of SMA Telkom Bandung. The findings revealed that vocabulary mastery and speaking performance in English presentation correlate. The calculated r value shows a higher result than the r table (0.791 > 0.339), which means the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected. Thus, there is a correlation between variable X (vocabulary mastery) and variable Y (speaking performance in English presentation). In conclusion, the higher the students' vocabulary mastery, the better their performance in English presentation. Improving vocabulary mastery can be one of the strategies to support students' speaking ability. In addition, systematic efforts to enrich students' vocabulary can help them perform more confidently and fluently in speaking. Future research can explore the correlation between vocabulary and other speaking skills, such as debate or discussion, with more diverse populations and samples.
