Abstract
This study analyzes the relationship between positive politeness strategies and humility as reflected in Jessica Tan's speech on the Endgame podcast. Brown and Levinson's (1987) politeness theory explains how to maintain the face of the interlocutor in social interactions, but there is still limited research linking this strategy to the concept of humility as a personal character trait. This study aims to analyze how the use of positive politeness strategies in Jessica Tan's conversations reflects humility in communication. The study used a descriptive qualitative approach, focusing on Jessica Tan's utterances in the podcast “Inside China's Business Culture: How She Leads Half A Million Employees” on Gita Wirjawan's YouTube channel. Data was collected through documentation methods by manually transcribing the video. The analysis was conducted in three stages: identifying utterances containing positive politeness strategies, categorizing quotes into fifteen types of positive politeness strategies, and interpreting the findings through the lens of humility based on four components of humility according to Elliot (2010). The results showed a strong correlation between positive politeness strategies and components of humility: openness, self-forgetfulness, modest self-assessment, and focus on others. The most prominent strategies were giving reason, asserting common ground, being optimistic, giving gifts, noticing and attending to H, and including both S and H in activity. This study contributed to the understanding that linguistic politeness reflected deeper personality values.
