Abstract
Sometimes most people prefer not to step out of their comfort zone because they are afraid of something that has not happened yet, but the actions and words of others can influence that thinking. Speech that is considered capable of influencing can be found in motivational speeches. This research aims to identify the types of directive speech acts used in selected motivational speeches on the TEDx Talks YouTube channel, as well as to determine the types of sentences used in those directive speech acts. This research uses the theory from R. Searle (1979), and the theory from Greenbaum & Randolph (1990). This research uses a qualitative method approach to identify and analyze the types of speech acts and sentence types used in selected motivational speeches. The results showed that there were 3 types of directive speech acts with 21 utterances, which are 13 commands, 5 suggestions, and 3 forbid. Then from those 21 directive speech acts, 2 types of sentences were found, with 17 imperative sentences and 4 declarative sentences. This research concludes that the most dominant type of directive speech act used in the selected motivational speeches is commands, with the imperative sentence type. This indicates that in the selected motivational speeches, the speech acts function as an order, and not just as utterances.
