Abstract

This research explores the use of language style and figurative language in A Eulogy for Those Still Here, an album by the Canadian melodic hardcore band Counterparts. The study is grounded in sociolinguistics, specifically using Martin Joos’s theory of language style and Lakoff and Johnson’s conceptual metaphor theory. The objectives are to identify the types of language style and figurative language used in the lyrics, and to examine how figurative expressions contribute to the thematic and emotional tone of the album. This qualitative study employed descriptive analysis to examine ten tracks from the album as the primary data source. Each lyric excerpt was analyzed and classified based on its linguistic features and symbolic function. A total of 30 instances of language style were found, with casual style as the most dominant, followed by formal, consultative, and intimate styles. Meanwhile, 27 figurative expressions were identified, consisting of metaphor, hyperbole, personification, symbolism, imagery, and simile. The findings reveal that Counterparts construct meaning not only through lyrical content but also through structured language choices that reflect emotional states, social relationships, and conceptual frameworks. The combined use of language style and figurative language contributes to the album’s cohesive emotional narrative, demonstrating the power of linguistic analysis in uncovering depth within other music genres.
