Abstract
Islamic Religious Education (PAI) at the junior high school level plays a crucial role in shaping students’ character, morals, and religious understanding. However, in its implementation, variations in students’ motivation and learning outcomes are still found, influenced by the teaching methods applied by teachers. This study is motivated by the importance of applying the Take and Give model based on game media as a learning strategy that is believed to enhance student engagement and improve the effectiveness of PAI learning at State Junior High School 2 Banjarsari. The objectives of this study are: (1) to analyze the differences in learning motivation between students taught using the Take and Give model with game media and those taught using Discovery Learning in PAI subjects at State Junior High School 2 Banjarsari; (2) to analyze the differences in learning outcomes between the two groups; and (3) to measure the influence of the Take and Give model based on game media on both motivation and learning outcomes of PAI students at State Junior High School 2 Banjarsari. This research is grounded in two main theories. First, Keller’s ARCS motivation theory, which includes four indicators: Attention, Relevance, Confidence, and Satisfaction. Second, Vygotsky’s constructivist theory, which emphasizes the importance of social interaction, information exchange, and collaboration in strengthening students’ understanding. The research employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental method using a nonequivalent control group design. The population consisted of all eighth-grade students at State Junior High School 2 Banjarsari. The sample comprised two classes, namely the experimental class (VIII B) and the control class (VIII A), selected through purposive sampling. Research instruments included observation guidelines, teacher and student interview guidelines, a multiple-choice learning achievement test, a motivation questionnaire, and document study guidelines. Data were collected through pre-tests, post-tests, and questionnaires, and analyzed using prerequisite tests, independent sample t-tests, N-Gain analysis, and MANOVA to examine the effectiveness of the Take and Give learning model based on game media on students’ motivation and learning outcomes. The findings of this study show that the implementation of the Take and Give model based on game media significantly improved students’ motivation and learning outcomes in Islamic Religious Education (PAI). The t-test revealed significant differences in motivation (t(65) = -35.021; Sig. < 0.001) and learning outcomes (t(65) = 12.570; Sig. < 0.001). The experimental class showed an average increase of 89.94% in motivation and 59.16% in learning outcomes, which were far higher than those of the control class (6.03% and 22.18%, respectively). MANOVA analysis confirmed these results (Sig. = 0.000), with parameter estimates indicating that the experimental class outperformed the control class by 23.145 points in motivation and 27.462 points in learning outcomes. Therefore, the Take and Give model based on game media proved to be more effective than Discovery Learning in enhancing motivation and learning outcomes in PAI among 8th-grade students at State Junior High School 2 Banjarsari during the 2024/2025 academic year. Based on these findings, it is recommended that Islamic Religious Education teachers further optimize the use of the Give and Take learning model based on game media as an alternative instructional strategy.
