Abstract

English is one of foreign languages that has to be learned in every education level starting from elementary school to university level even kindergarten level. The purpose of teaching English at elementary school is that the students are able to read, to listen, to speak, and to write in simple English with emphasis on speaking skill, which is related to the need of society such as tourism and industry. So, English has important position in every educational level including elementary school. This research has three aims, they are to know how good the students’ achievement in speaking by using regular teaching is and to know how good the students’ achievement in speaking by using Mnemonic technique is. Then, there any significant difference between students’ speaking skill by using Mnemonic technique and students’ speaking skill by using regular teaching is. Mnemonic technique is an alternative learning and that technique can be used in learning foreign language especially English. In this research, the writer uses Mnemonic technique, by using song, in order to help the students in memorizing English words. When students save the words in their mind, they can recall the words and then they speak. It means that speaking is happening. This research uses quantitative method with experimental and control class. The writer takes 80 students as sample in the research then she divides sample into two classes, they are experimental class as many as 40 students and control class as many as 40 students. The students at the SDN Linggar III are an experimental class that are given Mnemonic technique as treatment while the students at the SDN Linggar I are a control class that is given regular teaching. The data are collected by pre-test and post-test orally. In conclusion, Ha is accepted if t count ≠t table and Ho is accepted if t count = t table. The data shows that tcount = 19.49 and ttable in the level of significance 1% is 2.38. It means that tcount ≠ttable and Ho is rejected. Conversely, Ha is accepted. Apparently, the average score for post-test is 68.9 in experimental class and 45.7 in control class. In other word, it is said that there is any significant effects of Mnemonic technique on students’ speaking skill. Hopefully, Mnemonic technique can be used effectively in teaching learning process. That technique can help students in learning English and help teacher in teaching English.
