Abstract

This study generally analyzes Sigmund Freud's theory of psychoanalysis being his essay that he wrote in 1919 “The Uncanny”. The subject used as research material for this study is Tod Browning's movie “Freaks” released in 1932 using a qualitative approach method. This movie is played by carnival performers, most of whom have unique bodies that have deformities. In its time, this film was considered disturbing by the audience to the point that this film was banned for three decades. Therefore, the author analyzes two problems, namely to find out about the relation between Freud's The Uncanny theory and the characters' mental state in Freaks (1932), and to explore more about the representation of The Uncanny displayed in Freaks (1932). The main purpose of this study is to deepen research on the study of aesthetics not only from the side of beauty, but also the disturbing side through the subject of films presented with Sigmund Freud's “The Uncanny” psychoanalytic theory. Based on Freud’s essay on “The Uncanny”, he mentioned several things that evokes the feeling of the uncanny such as Castration-Complex, Human-Resembling Objects (like automaton), Double (Doppelganger), Recurrence of The Same Situations, and for a fiction to evoke such feelings, it has to feel like a reality-testing. Just like a fantasy, the feeling of the uncanny came from a repression, like from the fears that have been in the back of the mind and buried there subconsciously. By using the documentation method, the research studied the contrast of the state of the characters with “Normal Body” (complete limbs, conventionally attractive), and “Deformed Body” (physically-disabled, the ones that are considered freaks by society).
