Abstract
This study examines EFL students’ experiences in enhancing their English-speaking skills through the Azar app. Adopting a qualitative case study with a psychological lens grounded in Vygotsky’s social interaction theory, the research focuses on eighth-semester students at UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung who struggle with fluency and accuracy. Data were triangulated through diary entries, semi-structured interviews, and questionnaires. Findings show that real-time interaction on Azar offers authentic communicative practice that contributes to improved fluency, confidence, and overall communicative competence. Students also reported using self-regulatory strategies such as repeated practice, leveraging interactive features, and reflective review to sustain progress. However, they faced challenges including limited vocabulary, difficulty understanding diverse accents, and technical and motivational barriers, a salient issue that emerged was sustaining regular engagement amid academic workload and the limited availability of structured feedback within the app environment. The study concludes that Azar is a valuable complementary tool for speaking development when purposefully scaffolded and integrated with other learning activities, addressing motivation, providing structured feedback, and ensuring technical reliability are essential to maximize its impact on EFL learners in the digital era.
