Abstract
This study examines how Ustaz Adi Hidayat (UAH) constructs a discourse on gender equality that is deeply embedded with ideological values. Beneath the normative religious narrative lies a process of reproducing patriarchal ideology through language and religious symbols. The research aims to analyze the construction of gender equality discourse in UAH’s sermons using Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) framework. Louis Althusser’s theory of ideology is applied to interpret the mechanism of patriarchal interpellation, while Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of symbolic capital explains how language functions as a source of symbolic power and legitimacy in religious discourse. The research data were obtained from transcripts of UAH’s sermons uploaded on the YouTube channel and analyzed using Fairclough’s three-dimensional model: text analysis, discourse practice, and social practice. The findings demonstrate that UAH constructs a discourse of gender equality in Islam as an essential and innate-based similarity. At the same time, this discourse reveals how power operates within the digital daʿwah sphere through a framing of meaning that appears neutral yet remains ideologically driven. Theoretically, this study contributes to expanding the application of Critical Discourse Analysis in religious studies, particularly within the context of digital preaching and gender equality. Practically, it offers insight into fostering critical awareness of religious language and encourages the development of counter-hegemonic discourses that promote egalitarian and socially just interpretations of Islam.
