Abstract

This study examined the impact of memorizing formulaic expressions on the speaking fluency of fourth-grade students at Mutiara Embun Pagi Islamic Elementary School. Observations showed that students struggled with English fluency due to limited vocabulary and hesitation. Formulaic expressions, as pre-constructed language units, are suggested to ease sentence formation, leading to smoother communication. The study used a pre-experimental design with 11 participants and involved pre- and post-tests. The treatment included three sessions where students memorized and practiced formulaic expressions through choral repetition, role-playing, and interactive games. Data from speaking tests were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test, and N-Gain analysis. Results revealed significant improvement in speaking fluency, with the average score rising from 11.00 to 17.09, an increase of 55.36%. The Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test showed a p-value of 0.003 (p < 0.05), confirming statistical significance. The average N-Gain score of 0.6750 indicated moderate improvement for all participants. In conclusion, memorizing formulaic expressions significantly enhances fluency in young learners. Teachers are encouraged to incorporate these expressions into communicative activities and provide students with ample practice in meaningful contexts.
